A River Through Time

Jacob Oblander | Savannah River

The first time I paddled the Savannah River down to the fish camp I call home I saw a beautiful river. But I also passed by old sections of the river cutoff for barge traffic, an old steam boat run aground almost 100 years ago, and the former site of a colonial landing. The Savannah River is beautiful for it’s natural beauty, but also for the rich part of American and Native American history that it contains. A 10,000 year old archeological site, ancient shell mounds, and early colonials sites. A river who’s history has affected all Americans, but too few know its value.
