How we Learned to Paddle the Waters Around the New Orleans, La. Area

Michael Vickers | North Shore of Lake Ponchatrian

As young men we would hope into our cars, trucks and vans and head out to the North Shore where we would find the only local rivers that were navigatible with canoes and kayaks. We would have one or two people drop us off at the starting points and then meet us at anywhere from 10 to 15 miles downriver. Sometimes it would take a few hours or less and other times depending on the current it may take longer. We would always camp out alongside the rivers and party into the nights. We were young and always looking for fun and adventure, what can you say. As we got older we got more adventurous and started traveling to bigger and farther locations to put into and paddle for all the thrills that we could have. We did this until we all started going to college or getting married and moving on with our lives. Occasionally a few of us would get together and make another trip for some more good times. Then old age starts to settle in and all you have are a bunch of great memories to look back on. It would be nice to be able to turn back the hands of time, but we know that that isn’t going to happen. So time to get back to the time we have to live with now.
