Lasting Memories

Catherine Jurgensen | Vermilion River, Illinois

My coworkers and I were just talking about Matthiessen State Park (IL), and I recalled how my dad used to enjoy taking us there as kids. On at least one occasion we followed the less traveled path (knowing my dad, a deer trail) and walked our way down to the Vermilion River. He walked us through the river where we looked for animals, skipped rocks, and found fossils; we were filthy by the time we returned to the car. Many years have passed since that day, but it remains a lasting, very enjoyable memory of adventures with my dad (the fun things you do when mom isn’t looking).
