No desolation in Desolation Canyon

Wendy Harder | Green River, Utah

We’d never even heard of Desolation Canyon, so what were two 60-something ladies doing embarking on a seven day rafting adventure down the Green River — when they’d signed up for a Yampa River trip? The fates (and low water on the Yampa) re-assigned us — and we had a chance to discover a National Historic Landmark with stunning canyons as we retraced part of the route of John Wesley Powell in 1869. Periodic rapids spiced up the journey which included viewing Indian petroglyphs and homestead sites. This was seven days of wonder and relaxation…no desolation in sight!
