Coffee in the Garden of Sacred Datura

Amy Brunvand | Colorado River, Utah

The Heart of the World is located at the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers in Canyonlands National Park. The tradition is to drink whiskey at the confluence and offer a little sip to the River. There is a large beach there with room for more than one group to camp, but on this particular trip we were the only people there. I slept out on the beach under fluttering bats and the Milky Way and got up at dawn to beat the desert heat. A magnificent garden of Sacred Datura was in full bloom on the sandy beach with their over sweet scent and weird purplish hue. On a river, the feeling of peace comes as soon as you launch, but there are certain moments when peacefulness becomes sublime.
