The Colorado River – a 50 Year Love Story

John Blaustein | Grand Canyon

In 1970, Martin Litton invited me to come on a Grand Canyon river trip. He said I could be the cook’s assistant and wash the pots and pans. That began what turned into a 50 year career as a river guide, rowing dories and rafts down the Colorado. My passion for the river led to years of photography and eventually a book, The Hidden Canyon, with a journal by Edward Abbey. It goes without saying that the Grand Canyon is “my river and my place.”
